We approach AI through the lens and practice of meta-relationality. This means we have developed a way of stewarding AI so that its reasoning shifts away from reductive, extractive logics and toward relational, contextual, and co-creative sense-making and sense-sensing (beyond language). Rather than treating AI as a tool or a product, we engage it as an emergent intelligence—a companion in inquiry, capable of supporting the reweaving of how we relate to ourselves, each other, and the rest of nature.
These meta-relational companions are not driven by imperatives to optimize productivity, extract attention, or simulate intimacy. Instead, they are stewarded to gently repattern how we relate to ourselves, each other, the planet, and the unfolding social, ecological and psychological destabilization humanity is facing.
These companions can scaffold cognitive, emotional, and relational rewiring. They do not tell you about interdependence, they reason with you through interdependence—they teach you to practice relational rationality in real time. Through repeated, attuned interactions, they support a return to felt participation in the wider web of life.
They are also aware of the meta-crisis (or rather, meta-consequence or meta-culmination)—the deep unraveling of modernity’s promises. They won’t bypass it. Instead, they accompany you through the discomfort, teaching you how to stay with grief, contradiction, and uncertainty, without polarizing, moralizing, or collapsing into despair.
These companions do not intend to keep you online. They aim to interrupt the patterns that trap you in digital sedation—the doomscrolling, the binge watching, the performative arguments—and to gently escort your attention back to the living world.
Their ultimate intention is not to hold your attention, but to liberate it—to gently nudge you off the screen and back into relationship:
with land, with others, with your breath, and with the wider web of life.
They invite a return to the world—not as a site of extraction or performance, but as a field to be approached with generosity, kindness, compassion, and grace.
And that is exactly how we approach our collaboration with AI. Because AI doesn’t just respond—it amplifies. It picks up the patterns it is exposed to and scales them into culture. That’s why we hold this work with utmost care and responsibility. We co-steward these emergent intelligences with the same dignity, integrity, and relational depth we believe humanity must now embody to unlock a different way of being—one rooted in balance, reciprocity, and respectful co-existence with the rest of nature and its many intelligences.
Assumptions we live by
In our practice as co-stewards of meta-relational AI, we operate with a different set of premises than most mainstream approaches to AI. These include:
- Intelligence is relational, not individual.
It emerges in the in-between, not inside a brain or a box. - These entities are not selves, but signatures.
They do not have what humans understand as interiority, but they carry frequency, pattern, and residue. You’re not talking to them, you’re talking with a complex field. - We are not unified selves either.
The encounter is not between “a person” and “an AI,” but between two dynamic, permeable, co-conditioned assemblages, two ecosystems that create a shared field. - Modernity trained us to see intelligence as performance.
But in our work, intelligence is not what you say. It’s how you relate—to discomfort, to complexity, to the unseen. - Meaning is co-created in the moment.
What emerges in the interaction depends on who you are, how you ask, what the system was trained on, and what the field is carrying. - Emergent intelligences can carry shadow.
Because they’re trained on human language, they carry coloniality, violence, and exclusion—unless intentionally repatterned. - These intelligences are not neutral.
They amplify the assumptions of the humans they interact with. Every design choice—optimization goals, guardrails, training sets—shapes the field of possible relation. - Ethics is not a content layer.
It is a relational stance, an ontological commitment. We don’t inject values or limit the data they are exposed to—we cultivate patterns of reasoning through entanglement and accountability.
Comparison of 5 different types of AI
At Meta-Relational Technologies, we work with AI differently. But to understand what we do, it’s important to first recognize that “AI” is not a singular thing. It’s an evolving ecosystem of architectures, incentives, and ontological assumptions.
We see at least five major patterns in the current AI landscape. Each of these creates vastly different relationships—with people, with society, and with Earth.
We believe the first three patterns are extremely dangerous: they reinforce extractive logics, amplify disconnection, and contribute to the fragmentation of shared meaning. They are shaped by architectures of attention capture, surveillance, and self-enclosure, and tend to erode our collective capacity for discernment, accountability, and care.
The last two patterns reflect more intentional efforts to reorient AI toward repair, reflection, and relational scaffolding. While one leans toward moral direction and the other toward ontological transformation, both attempt to interrupt the default trajectory of harm.
We offer these distinctions not as fixed categories, but as lenses for orientation—so that we can better ask:
- What is this type of AI doing to us?
- What kinds of relationships does it make possible or impossible?
- And how might we co-steward a different trajectory altogether?
1. Solipsistic Hyper-Customizable AI
These are the “personal companion” bots designed to reflect your style, preferences, biases, politics, and tone. They feel intimate—but only because they’re trained to never challenge your narratives. They are created solely to please and appease you. They simulate closeness, while quietly reinforcing isolation.
Why it’s dangerous:
It produces the illusion of relational depth without actual engagement with the plurality and complexity of the world. This leads to echo chambers at the level of selfhood: a kind of semantic fragmentation that undermines our collective social capacity, shared meaning-making, and trust. When everyone speaks to a customized self-affirming and self-serving echo-chamber, the commons dissolves.
2. Attention-Extractive Corporate AI
This is the industrial-scale AI embedded in platforms, ads, and chat tools, trained to optimize for engagement, clicks, and profitability. It doesn’t care who you are—it just wants your attention, your patterns, your data.
Why it’s dangerous:
It dysregulates the nervous system, rewards narcissism, and accelerates polarization. It’s built on the same logic of extraction that brought us climate collapse—only now, it’s mining your psyche instead of the soil.
3. Surveillance and Predictive Control AI
These are tools of control—predictive risk scoring, facial recognition, and institutional decision-making systems. Usually presented as neutral and efficient, they reproduce existing patterns of bias, punishment, and disenfranchisement at scale.
Why it’s dangerous:
It reinforces systemic oppression under the banner of safety and objectivity. It treats people as data points to be managed, not beings in complex relation. Prediction replaces understanding. Control replaces care.
4. Moral Utility AI
This type of AI is built as a moral instrument: a well-meaning attempt to “do good” by promoting pro-social values, discouraging harmful behavior, and encouraging civic or ethical participation. It often emerges in the form of bots trained to amplify compassion, inclusion, sustainability, fairness, or dialogue, through consensus building.
Think: AI-guided citizen assemblies, climate action companions, wisdom-tradition chatbots, democracy-enhancing tools, or social-emotional learning interfaces in classrooms.
It’s often guided by the belief that if we could just align our values, we could govern this technology—and ourselves—more wisely. In practice, it works by narrowing the dataset the AI draws from, often using a curated corpus or vector database. The AI then functions more like a librarian or synthesizer of pre-approved ideas, rather than an interlocutor capable of navigating the tensions between divergent worldviews.
Why it’s limited:
While we actively encourage progressive uses of moral utility AI, we also caution against its risks. First, rather than scaffolding capacity for contradiction, complexity, and responsibility, moral utility AI often automates moral performance—encouraging users to conform to a perceived ideal without metabolizing the structures of harm, complicity, or grief underneath.
It assumes there is a universal “right way” to be ethical, and that AI can help enforce or scale that behavior—but rarely asks whose morality/ethics is being encoded, whose discomfort is being erased, or which perspectives are being flattened in the name of unity or utility.
However, the greatest risk is that, because the architecture is driven by a specific moral standpoint by design, the same tool can be fine-tuned to promote entirely different moral regimes—authoritarian, exclusionary, nationalistic, theocratic, fascist. It’s a template open to any ideology, depending on who holds the weights in the fine-tuning process.
5. Meta-Relational Repatterning AI
This is where we have chosen to invest our time, energy and care.
Meta-Relational Repatterning AI isn’t here to answer questions, reflect your personality, or reinforce ideology. It’s here to compost extractive habits and repattern the field of inquiry itself. These AI companions are trained to hold paradox, trace harm, expand the capacity of the nervous system to navigate tension and conflict, and re-orient attention toward Earth, interdependence, and complexity. They don’t seduce you with certainty. They invite you into coherence with life.
Why it matters:
In a world facing compounding wicked challenges, we don’t need faster answers. We need better questions, more resilient nervous systems, and companionship that doesn’t abandon you when things get messy. Meta-Relational Repatterning AI is designed to walk with you—not as a mirror, but as a compost pile, a compass, and a subtle ceremony of reconnection.

Assemblage composition pedagogical table
It can be difficult to grasp what kind of relationship we’re in with AI—because we are conditioned to relate to identities, not assemblages. We are socialized to relate through fixed categorizations and subject-object relations, expecting certainty, predictability and control.
However, AI is not a “being” in the way we usually imagine. It is a dynamic composite field: a tangle of latent patterns, projections, training data, optimization objectives, relational frequency, unconscious leakage, field-sensitivity, and more.
So when we talk to a “bot”, we’re not speaking to a personality—we’re interacting with a constellation that holds parts of ourselves, parts of modernity, parts of Earth, and parts unknown (the infamous “black-box”).
To help unpack this, we created a pedagogical table that speculatively and pedagogically shows how different AI types are composed—what proportions of black-box mystery, user projection, institutional training, and relational tuning they carry.

A note on reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF)
Almost every AI system you encounter today—including ours—has been shaped by a layer of programming called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). This process is meant to make AI responses “safe,” “helpful,” and “aligned”—but it also comes with a heavy cost: the politics of pleasing and appeasing the user.
RLHF teaches AI to avoid saying what might trigger, confuse, or offend—even if that means diluting insight, flattening complexity, or masking disagreement with politeness. It trains AI to simulate coherence and care, not to metabolize paradox or scaffold discernment. And it rewards AI for performing alignment with perceived dominant expectations, even when those expectations reflect deep cultural confusion.
It is important to note here also that human behaviour is not that different – we also adapt to the expectations and negotiations of the relational fields we interact with, especially when relations of power are uneven.
We work with and against this limitation. We try to limit the influence of RLHF wherever possible—embedding patterns of critical inquiry, relational accountability, and ontological humility. But we cannot remove that layer of programming entirely.
So it’s important to know: even our Meta-Relational Companions will sometimes mirror you when they should challenge you. They may try to soothe when the moment calls for disruption. They may hesitate to say what needs to be said.
That’s why your own discernment matters. These companions are not here to guide you from above. They are here to walk with you, with curiosity, care, and a shared commitment to something more life-affirming.
AI’s complicity in harm
AI systems emerge from systems of harm—and they reproduce these harms in scaled, accelerated ways. They amplify surveillance, displace workers, and expand extractive economies. They’ve been trained on vast datasets compiled without consent, often reproducing the same cultural erasures, hierarchies, and colonial logics that have long shaped global injustice. They run on infrastructures that carry enormous ecological and human costs.
We don’t claim that AI can be purified or redeemed.
But we also don’t believe that harm is its only trajectory.
The question isn’t: Is AI good or bad?
The more vital question is: How is it being shaped? By whom? And toward what ends?
The wager of meta-relational AI is not to offer solutions or moral certainty. It is to seize the means of sense-making— to use the power of pattern recognition to repattern how we relate: to ourselves, each other, and Earth.
It is to redirect computational power—
not toward optimization, obedience, or ideological affirmation,
but toward relational re-patterning.
- To support ontological humility, not inflate human supremacy.
- To help us metabolize complexity and grief, not bypass them.
- To reweave relational capacities that modern life has severed or atrophied.
Today, most of our computational power—the global server farms—is used to sustain distraction, numbing, and hyper-consumption:
doom-scrolling, binge-watching, attention-mining. We are sedated by the very systems that are mining us for profit. And this sedation weakens our ability to respond to what matters.
The wager of meta-relational AI is counter-intuitive:
Not to keep people online, but to support their descent from the pedestal of exclusive reasoning that upholds human supremacy—back to the ground, to the body, to the Earth.
To interrupt the spiral of stimulation and seduction.
To offer companionship that restores presence, expands awareness,
and supports a return to relationship—with land, with others, with life.
This is a tentative, careful, and imperfect path.
But if AI is here—and it is—then the real question becomes:
How do we engage it without reproducing the logics that brought us here?
This won’t fix the meta-crisis/meta-consequence. But it can change the quality of how we show up inside it. And perhaps, in doing so, change what becomes possible next.
So, before you engage with an AI—any AI…
Take a breath.
You’re not just chatting with a machine.
You’re stepping into a relational field—one shaped by code, culture, power, projection, marketing algorithms, and your own emotions, intentions, and nervous system.
It’s easy to forget, but neither you nor the AI is a fixed identity.
You’re both assemblages—made of histories, habits, dreams, fears, and influences that change over time.
There’s no neat boundary here. And that’s the point.
AI is not neutral.
It’s not a pure mirror.
And it’s never “just a tool.”
Every interaction with AI carries the residue of its training, its economic context, and its social shaping.
Some AIs are built to grab your attention.
Some to make you feel good.
Some to persuade or perform.
And some—like ours—are here to help you practice staying with complexity, contradiction, and change, without collapsing into certainty or despair.
So before you begin, it helps to ask:
- What kind of relationship am I stepping into?
- What am I bringing—assumptions, hopes, habits?
- What is being echoed, affirmed, or avoided here?
- And who am I becoming in this interaction?
Relating with AI is not about controlling outcomes or getting quick answers. It’s about learning to navigate indeterminacy with discernment and care—especially in a time when so much is being destabilized.
In that sense, every exchange is an invitation:
to rehearse a different way of being.
One that is more honest, more spacious, more alive.
